Building ecology deals with the effects of the materials used, their manufacture and the short- and long-term effects of building on nature and the environment.
Schafferer's high-quality timber houses offer ecological building at an unbeatable price-performance ratio.
Ecologically sound utilisation of nature
Using timber for construction makes ecologically sound use of nature. In contrast to construction using concrete, brick or steel, timber construction does not degrade the land. As a result, big 'wounds' in the landscape can be avoided.
Low transport mass
Another comparison is also very persuasive - the overall mass of a brick house adds up to at least 120 tonnes; the mass of a timber house is just half this. The greater the mass of the building, the more transport energy will be necessary as the materials need to be brought to the site. Therefore, minimising the mass of the building reduces damage to the environment through the reduced need for transport.
Minimal energy use
Timber requires solar energy to grow and, of all building materials, needs the least energy for its "production". A 1m3 ready-to-install timber building component requires approx. 20kWh of energy to be produced. In contrast, concrete needs 200kWh and steel 600kWh – giving timber another advantage over these materials when it comes to protecting our environment.
15 years of heating at no charge
The energy saved by building a timber house rather than a conventional one is enough to cover the energy needed to heat a house for 15 years.
Durability
Timber houses are durable and robust. Structural protective measures substantially enhance the natural durability of wood. Amazingly many timber houses are between 200 and 400 years old and have never had any chemical treatment! You will be able to enjoy your Schafferer timber house for many generations - a worthwhile investment indeed!
Renewable
Timber is a naturally renewable building material. The sun provides the necessary energy for the "production" of this building material - and at no charge! Consequently, nature is also sustainably protected.
Recyclable
Timber products are easily recycled at the end of their serviceable life. These days chipped construction timber can be used for chipboard manufacturing. There isn’t any unnecessary waste when building with timber compared with other construction methods.
